While widely reported—such as the recent high-profile case involving a Padre Pio statue in Casalba, Italy, the Roman Catholic Church concludes that almost all are hoaxe. Only a single weeping Madonna has ever been officially verified by a pope, occurring in Syracuse, Sicily in 1953.
